Important Health Istita’ah Requirements for Hajj Travel

The 2025 AD/1446 AH Hajj pilgrimage is fast approaching, and prospective pilgrims must meet the health istita’ah requirements before settling the Hajj travel costs. In accordance with the Minister of Religious Affairs’ Decree (KMA) Number 142 of 2025, each pilgrim must fulfill the health istita’ah requirements before making the payment. These requirements are outlined in the 2018 Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Fatwa on Health Istita’ah for Hajj, which includes being physically and mentally capable, having a valid excuse, and the authority of the government to deny permission for Hajj departure based on medical and sharia considerations.

For Hajj pilgrimage, it is essential to be in excellent physical and mental condition. Pilgrims with serious or chronic health conditions are advised to delay or substitute their Hajj. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has set health regulations and standards for the 1446 AH Hajj season, requiring pilgrims to be free of medical conditions that significantly reduce their physical capabilities. Conditions such as kidney failure, heart disease, chronic lung disease, liver cirrhosis, neurological disorders, dementia, pregnancy, active contagious diseases, and cancer undergoing chemotherapy do not meet the health criteria for pilgrimage.

To ensure compliance with these health istita’ah requirements, pilgrims must undergo a thorough medical examination assessing their physical, cognitive, mental, and daily activity ability. Meeting these requirements is crucial for the safety and well-being of pilgrims during the Hajj pilgrimage.
