The National Nutrition Agency (Badan Gizi Nasional, BGN) is pushing for the integration of nutrition education into the national school curriculum to create a healthier, smarter, and globally competitive generation of Indonesians. According to Ikeu Tanziha, a member of BGN’s Nutrition Expert Council, incorporating structured nutrition education at an early age is essential for developing a comprehensive understanding of nutrition. By educating students on basic nutritional concepts, food group classification, nutrient roles, and the consequences of unhealthy eating habits, schools can help students make informed dietary choices and prevent diet-related illnesses like obesity and diabetes.
Furthermore, nutrition education in schools not only teaches students about balanced diets but also equips them with practical skills such as cooking and gardening. This hands-on approach allows students to apply their knowledge in real-life situations and promotes healthy lifestyle habits. By integrating nutrition education into the curriculum, schools can establish a strong partnership among students, families, and communities to emphasize the importance of balanced nutrition across society.
The goal of these educational initiatives is to support national nutrition programs like the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) Program by raising awareness and promoting healthy eating practices. BGN encourages government agencies, schools, parents, media, and the public to rally behind the integration of nutrition education into the school curriculum as part of Indonesia’s vision for a Golden Generation by 2045.
